WordPress is a constantly evolving platform with core files, themes and updates being updated regularly. If your website is mission critical to your business then WordPress maintenance is essential to keep your website up to date and backed up.
There are a few key reasons for this.
Why do you need WordPress maintenance?
Malicious hackers are always trying to find ways to break in to WordPress sites. With WordPress powering over 25% of the web, if they can hack WordPress they have potential access to millions of websites.
For this reason, WordPress, theme, and plugin developers are constantly finding and fixing security flaws in the software. Keeping your site up to date is one of the best ways to keep it secure.
As software improves it typically gets faster. Good developers are always looking for ways to improve the performance of their code.
Therefore, keeping your website up to date keeps it running smoothly and quickly.
The WordPress ecosystem is a collection of plugins, themes and the WordPress core. It’s a fine balancing act to keep all of these separate programs working well with each other.
Plugin and theme authors are, usually, testing their code against the latest release of WordPress to guarantee compatibility. Proper WordPress maintenance will ensure that the code all works together, and any new plugins that you add are less likely to break things.
Backups and site restoration
If the worst happens and your site gets hacked, or your server goes offline. What will you do? Can you afford to have no website for a day, a week, or more? Can you afford to rebuild the entire thing if your site is lost?
Keeping a full backup of your website, on a separate server, will help protect you against this worst case scenario.
